Nefarious Movie Review
I was enthralled from the opening scene until the credits rolled. The possessed prisoner Edward/Nefarious played by Sean Patrick Flannery was portrayed perfectly, his character toggling between Edward and Possessor. The sure-of-himself lawyer Dr. James Martin played by Jordan Belfi sluffs off the initial concerns when he interviews "Edward" thinking it's just the normal craziness of a psychotic prisoner. James (Jimmy as Nefarious insults him a couple of times) gets a prophecy, a foretelling of key moments in James' future that will unfold in mere hours in the story to come. And you the watcher are drawn in wondering how this foreknowledge is going to unfold. From there you are in for the ride and it unfolds in exciting and unforeseen ways.
It was a great movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it even as it was haunting. It transcends simple entertainment though and prompts the watcher to think about the world we are experiencing in post-modern and also the ancient times.
Because the story was created by a Christian, Steve Deace, I also thought about the theology underpinning the world of the movie as I am a Christian as well. I've read one of his non-fiction books. and I've watched his show several times. He is a great culture warrior for Truth. Deace seems to take the Frank Peretti or the current, and prevailing, conventional view of demonology. That is that demons and angels are like the same beings but on opposite sides. But it's really FALLEN angles vs. angels. Demons are earth-born, as in the surviving spirits of the Nephilim/Giants/demigods wiped out in the flood. See Genesis 6:1-4. Demons are the offspring of fallen angels cursed to roam the earth until the day of judgment. The verse that "Edward" quoted in the priest came is from Matthew 8:29.
If Mr. Deace reads this, which he probably won't, I would encourage him and others with the conventional view of demonology to read the works of Dr. Michael Heiser, especially The Unseen Realm. That would be a GREAT starting point.
